Where it all began

Our story began in 1924 when Rosa was born and lived in Montecalvo, a small town and commune located upon a hill oversighting the Ufita Mountain Valley. The origins of Montecalvo goes back to the Norman times when it was built on the ruins of the Roman Forum Novum.

 

Today, Montecalvo and the surrounding region is known for its bread, cheese and premium olive oil. At an early age, Rosa learned the local art of making bread and organic olive oil production using the wheat and olives of the nearby fields. Her dad owned a flour mill and all of the local towns people brought theirs grains to be made into four for bread making. As a young adult, Rosa saved enough money to purchase her first few acres of land with over 100 olive trees. It was here that she learned how to carefully grow and produce her own olive oil. Over the ensuing years she added more land and trees to her orchard and expanded her business and production.

 

After tending to her orchard throughout the year, each October and November, Rosa would carefully harvest the olives, take them to the local mill and press them using an old-world technique involving crushing the olives into paste using rotating large round granite stones. The final oil was extracted from the paste using pressure “squeezing” machines. All of this hard work resulted in producing the purest and most tasteful oil in all of Italy. There were no additives or chemicals ever used in Rosa’s process. The soil and temperatures of the surrounding area aided in growing the finest olive trees and subsequently producing superior tasting Premium Olive Oil.

The Next Generation

    Rosa’s vision lives on now through the careful hands of her two daughters, Antonietta and Maria. Both sisters were born in Montecavlo until they immigrated to America as young girls to be reunited with their dad, who had moved to Cleveland, Ohio to established several local businesses.
    Through Olio Montecalvo, the daughters hope to honor their mother’s legacy of  hard work, learning a trade, never giving up as women and producing only the finest of results.
    As young girls, the sisters remember spending long summer days by their mother’s side watching her carefully tend to her trees and then seeing the olives being harvested in the fall. From the trees, the olives were removed by hand before they were transported to the mill, often times in containers attached to a donkey.
   Today, Antonietta and Maria, are excited to carry on the tradition started by their mother Rosa so many years ago. Their new vision is to serve you only the finest tasting, premium 100% extra virgin olive oil, free from additives and chemicals that flood the current world-wide olive oil market.
